I incorporated msot of the amendments proposed from SchoolApps, partially verbatim, partially rewritten and partially reordered.

I left out the part about editors and IDEs because I consider that really out of scope (and very opinionated). The provided choices were also questionnable, as they only contained freemium editors with unclear relationships to Microsoft, Google and JetBrains. Some people are very productive without an IDE, even on large projects, and new developers really should try if they want.
